What is MISCA Adventure?

MiSCA Adventure is a program whose purpose is to provide a social “Outside of the race series” activity for the entire MISCA organization, including coaches!

In the Summer of 2024, we held three events, at Stony Creek Metropark, Brighton Rec Area, and Pontiac Lake Rec Area.  We plan to hold events at these same venues in the Summer of 2025!

What’s new in MISCA Adventure in 2025?

Thanks to feedback from the community, there are two things that we are changing for 2025.

  1. We are now offering “Practice Takeovers”, where we will come to your practice to both instruct students and coaches with “Adventure Racing 101” where you will learn about the sport, and what we do in the MiSCA Adventure Program, AND have a short event created just for your MiSCA team.  Take this link for more.
  2. All three of our Adventure Challenges will include a 1-hour event!  This is in response to requests for shorter events, which accommodate our youngest MiSCA members, AND allows participation in an adventure event without taking the whole day (completion by ~1PM).

What is an Adventure Challenge?

It is based on Adventure Racing, but the competition is fun and light-hearted.  Time and points count, but there are no podiums, medals, or prizes; just bragging rights.  It includes:

  • Mountain Biking
  • Trekking (walking/running)
  • Land Navigation (using a map and compass).

Adventure Challenges are timed events for teams of four, with a predetermined time cutoff. Our events typically have a 1-hour or a 2-hour cutoff.  The “challenge” is to find as many control points as possible within the time limit.

When will the Adventure Challenges be in 2025?

There will be three adventure challenges in 2025, at the same locations that we used in 2024, and all on Saturdays:

What is a typical Adventure Challenge schedule?

The actual schedule for each event will be posted on the event pages for Stony Creek, Brighton, and Pontiac Lake, but will generally look like this (if there is demand, we will offer a 4-hour event at Pontiac Lake, which would make for a longer day).

  • 09:00 am: 2-hour challenge check-in, hand out event paperwork
  • 09:30 am: 2-hour pre-challenge meeting
  • 09:45 am: End of pre-challenge meeting, start of team strategy, 1-hour challenge check-in begins
  • 10:00 am: Start of the 2-hour challenge
  • 10:15 am: 1-hour pre-challenge meeting
  • 10:30 am: End of pre-challenge meeting, start of team strategy sessions
  • 10:45 am: Start of the 1-hour challenge
  • 11:45 am: Cutoff for 1-hour challenge; pizza available
  • 12:00 pm: Cutoff for 2-hour challenge; pizza continues to be available
  • 12:30 pm: Results announced for both challenges
  • 01:00 pm: Event complete

Will we have Ten-Minute Challenges again?

YES!!!  By popular demand, during three of the six MiSCA races in the Fall, fun and short Ten-Minute challenges will be held.  Once again, there will be no charge.  If you want to do a very short version of the Adventure Challenge, just come to the Adventure table during the race (2PM-5PM Saturday, 11AM-2PM Sunday), There is no pressure, and you don’t have to plan ahead.  Just walk up and say, “I want to do the Ten-Minute Challenge”!  Locations to be announced during race season.
